Commentary: U.S. "sanctions" do no good to China-U.S. relations

BRUSSELS, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Mission to the European Union (EU) said Monday that China is firmly opposed to the EUs interfering in Hong Kong affairs and Chinas internal affairs and practising double standards on the law-based exercise of duties by Hong Kong police.

It cited Apple as an example. "In a world where many homes in the west are cluttered with its devices, China also offers a vital source of fresh customers," said the article.

The Global Consensus Statement story

"Today we are in the 21st century. Why should we allow history to repeat? Why should we repeat what happened in the last century when we are faced with so many new challenges, global challenges? I dont think a new cold war would serve anybodys interests or will give us any solution to the problem," Cui said, responding to a question on the recent speech on China by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at the Nixon Library.

CAIRO, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Though the raging COVID-19 pandemic is casting a shadow over the economy of the Middle East, cooperation between China and Arab countries has shown resilience and vitality, offering hope of post-pandemic recovery in the region.

Now, the ball is in the U.S. court. For the interests of both China and the United States, as well as those of the wider world, China is always ready to work with the U.S. side to boost bilateral ties on the basis of coordination, cooperation and stability, and to maintain global peace and prosperity.

In recent years, for example, Washington has withdrawn from the Paris Agreement, UNESCO, the UN Human Rights Council, and the Global Compact for Migration.

The signing ceremony also unveiled 20 investment-promotion projects that are open to global investors, in areas such as new-energy vehicles, tourism, offshore trade and duty-free retail.
"If we have a close look at the history of our relations since President (Richard) Nixons visit to China, or since Dr. (Henry) Kissinger visit to China, several things are quite clear," said the ambassador.
Whenever it seeks to contain Chinas increasing tech influence or defend the U.S. industry from competition, the present U.S. administration has cited national security concerns without concrete evidence, unscrupulously putting any competitor or challenger into the crosshairs for punishment like a fine, ban or sanction.
The two countries are unlikely to have greater confrontation since "for purely economic reasons, it is not convenient for them to enter into a dangerous escalation," said Carrion.
The U.S. administration and some U.S. politicians acted out in such an anxious and reckless manner over Hong Kong-related issues to cover up their own botched response to COVID-19, economy and other domestic problems, the spokesperson noted.
John W. Allen, former vice chairman of the United Nations (UN) Business Council, told Xinhua that he applauds the mutual success that has occurred for the two countries over the past 41 years, and is distressed by the negative language being used to describe China in the U.S. press.
It must be pointed out that U.S. accusations against the national security law for Hong Kong go against facts, and have legal and logical fallacies.
The U.S. practice has no factual basis at all and is sheer malicious slander and political manipulation in an attempt to maintain its high-tech monopoly, he said. "This is a typical hegemonic behavior that runs against market principles and international trade rules and severely threatens the security of global industrial and supply chains."
The United States, while having at least 20 laws on national security and sovereignty itself, has rampantly slandered and maligned Chinas national security legislation for Hong Kong, taking double standards and hypocrisy to the extreme.
"China-U.S. cooperation has never been a case of one party giving favor to the other, or one party taking advantage of the other. Both countries have benefited much from this cooperation," he stressed.
The controller worried that funding for these projects from international financial institutions will be cut off if these projects cannot be completed on time.
Some U.S. politicians are peddling that "the engagement policy toward China fails," aiming to shift the governments responsibility for its ineffective response to the epidemic and serve the political needs of elections, said Santoro, adding such a move can only lead to a more complicated situation for the United States and other countries.
"To safeguard and stabilize China-U.S. relations is the call of the people and the trend of the times," Yang said. "We urges U.S. decision-makers to respect facts of history, recognize the trend of the times, heed the visionary calls in the United States, and listen to the voice of the international community."
China will continue to work with all countries to maintain a fair, just, open and non-discriminatory business environment, and ensure that safe, reliable and quality information technology will boost global economic recovery and help improve peoples lives around the world, he said.
China and the United States must always bear in mind the well-being of mankind, live up to their responsibilities as two major countries, coordinate and cooperate as needed in the UN and other multilateral institutions, and work together for world peace and stability, said Wang. ■
He urged the United States to rectify its wrongdoing, create conditions for the normal trade and economic cooperation between companies from different countries and restore a free, open and safe cyberspace to the world.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday issued an executive order banning any U.S. transactions with the Chinese tech firm ByteDance, owner of TikTok, starting in 45 days.
When responding to a query about whether the moves are countermeasures against earlier announcements by the two countries to suspend relevant extradition agreements with Hong Kong, Zhao said Germanys unilateral announcement of suspending the agreement and Frances halt of the ratification of the agreement have politicized judicial cooperation with Hong Kong, interfered in Chinas internal affairs and violated international laws and basic norms governing international relations. "China is firmly opposed to such practices," said Zhao.

"Cooperation between China and the United States has always been conducted for mutual benefit," he said, adding the two countries have had productive cooperation in such areas as counter-terrorism, non-proliferation and narcotics control, among others.
WASHINGTON, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The United States has to be aware that there is "a rising anger" among the Chinese public over Washingtons hostile moves against China, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai has said.
BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Wednesday the Chinese side is ready to enter into candid, effective consultation with the U.S. side and make cool-headed and sensible response to the impulsive moves and anxiety of the U.S. side.
